New Orleans' Jackson Square a returning site for us
Jackson Square in New Orleans

This week I traveled down to New Orleans to see my mom and family there. While we were there, several times we needed to split up a few expenses. The last time I had to divvy up who paid for what was on a bachelor party, we used Splitwise. It's a great tool to track and log expenses, and then divide up who paid or owed how much.

However, I quickly hit a roadblock with Splitwise and their paywall limited the app's usefulness. Using the freemium version of Splitwise you're limited on the amount of transactions you can submit. Additionally, you have to log each transaction manually and then tag the person. It can be tedious if one person doesn't pay or you don't split the bill evenly.

But this time, I decided to try something different. I experimented with using Claude AI to manage our expenses and let me tell you, it was like having a super-smart, always-available accountant right in my pocket.

Using Expense Splitting AI

At the start of my trip to New Orleans, I was a little skeptical if AI could handle our group expenses. But from the moment we started inputting costs, I was blown away by Claude AI's capabilities in expense management. Using Claude is as easy as taking a picture of your receipt and then asking Claude to itemize.

Handling Complex Scenarios with Ease

One of the key advantages of using AI for expense splitting is its ability to handle complex scenarios. Take our hotel stay, for instance. We split a $256 bill four ways, but only three of us were part of the ongoing expense tracking. This kind of situation would typically require some mental gymnastics, but Claude AI handled it effortlessly.

Real-Time Adjustments: A Game-Changer in Group Expense Tracking

One of the most impressive features was Claude's ability to make real-time adjustments. At one point, we decided to subtract $10 off someone's total (hey, things can get complicated in the Big Easy!). With Claude, it was as simple as saying, "Subtract 10 off Jacky's balance," and voila - everything was recalculated instantly

From Beignets to Bus Tours: Diverse Expense Tracking Made Simple

As we explored the Big Easy, from sipping coffee in the French Quarter to taking a bus tour, Claude AI became our financial co-pilot. It processed a wide array of expenses with ease:

  • Restaurant bills (like $59.51 at Rum House)

  • Parking fees ($147.50 for 2.5 days)

  • A city bus tour ($177)

  • Even small coffee runs ($17)

Each time, Claude AI categorized the expense, added it to our running total, and rebalanced who owed what, showcasing its versatility in group expense management.

AI-Powered Receipt Processing and Tip Calculations

When we dined at the Court of Two Sisters, I was impressed by how Claude extracted all the relevant information from our receipt. It noted the total bill of $232.25, including the $32 tip, and immediately factored this into our ongoing calculations.

The Final Tally: AI Precision in Expense Splitting

By the end of our trip, Claude had processed dozens of transactions, continuously rebalancing and providing up-to-date figures on who owed what to whom. The final settlement was crystal clear, with no need for complex spreadsheets or manual calculations.

Compared to traditional methods or apps like Splitwise, using Claude AI for expense splitting offered several advantages:

  1. Instant recalculation after each new input

  2. Easy handling of complex splits

  3. Ability to process and incorporate detailed receipt information

  4. Flexibility to make on-the-spot adjustments

  5. Clear, running totals of debits and credits

  6. No risk of manual calculation errors
